What is Levaquin?
Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is a broad spectrum antibiotic commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis. It is also used to treat respiratory and skin infections.
Dosing instructions for Levaquin.
Levaquin is usually taken once per day for three to 10 days or longer, depending on the severity and the type of infection. Levaquin is usually taken in the morning and may be taken with or without meals. Try to drink plenty of liquids. If you have any questions, contact us or your pharmacist.
If you are using other prescribed medications you should inform your physician. Mineral supplements, vitamins with iron or minerals, calcium-aluminum or magnesium-based antacids, or sucralfate should not be taken within two hours before or after taking Levaquin. Take all the medicine prescribed even after you begin to feel better. If you have had no signs of improvement within three days, or still have signs of infection when the medication is completed, give us a call.
Rarely, Levaquin causes dizziness or lightheadedness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how Levaquin will affect you.
What special dietary instructions should I follow while using Levaquin?
Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. (Other liquids are OK; water is best.) Do not take antacids such as Tums, Rolaids or Maalox within two hours of taking Levaquin. It is OK to drink caffeinated beverages.
What side effects can Levaquin cause? What can I do about them?
What other precautions should I follow while taking Levaquin?
Levaquin should not be taken during pregnancy or while nursing a baby. Please inform us if you think you are pregnant. Do not allow children to take this drug. Some patients can be sensitive to the sun and may sunburn easily while taking this medication. Use a hat and sunscreen until you have completed taking this medication.
What if I forget to take a dose?
Please try to take your medication on schedule, particularly in the beginning. Try to take your medication at the same time every day. We recommend taking it in the morning with your breakfast. If you miss a dose, don't double up. Take your next dose as soon as you can and try to stay on schedule for the rest of the therapy.
